    First, ensure you lower the feed dogs to prevent the fabric from feeding, and adjust the zigzag stitch width so that the needle enters the buttonholes. To create a button shank, insert an awl or similar object into the groove of the presser foot before sewing; this ensures the stitching forms a loop appropriate for the fabric thickness.
